Fight over grass clippings
BOARDMAN -- Police have charged a 56-year-old township man with misdemeanor assault and aggravated menacing after a fight over grass clippings Wednesday evening. According to reports, Dan Nicoara of Salinas Trail got angry when a man cutting his neighbor's grass blew grass clippings onto his property. Police said Nicoara came outside and hit the man in the face. Reports say the 35-year-old Youngstown man had injuries to his nose and left eye. It is unclear whether he went to the hospital. The injured man told police Nicoara produced a handgun. No gun was found and Nicoara said he doesn't have a gun, police said.
Early release denied
YOUNGSTOWN -- A judge has denied Robin Rogers' request to be released early from prison. Rogers, 45, of Geauga County, is serving a one-year sentence for stealing more than $51,000 from the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp., for which she once worked as director. She filed a request for early release in August after serving about two months in prison. Judge Jack Durkin denied the request this week.
A.P. O'Horo gets contract
YOUNGSTOWN -- A.P. O'Horo Co. of Youngstown was hired as general contractor for construction of a Walton Avenue bridge. County commissioners awarded a contract for $2.667 million. The bridge is part of the Mahoning River Corridor of Opportunity. It will connect Walton Avenue, where Youngstown, Struthers and Campbell come together, to an abandoned brownfield site just across the Mahoning River in Campbell. Work is expected to begin in October and be completed within a year, said county Engineer Richard Marsico.
Help for cemeteries
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Don Kegarise of the New Springfield VFW Post 2799 presented a $100 check to the Springfield Township trustees Wednesday and promised the post will donate an additional $100 per month for a year to help maintain township cemeteries. Trustee Shirley Heck invited anyone who would like to help with a project to repair old tombstones in township cemeteries to call the township building at (330) 542-2377.
Flag-burning ceremony
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Anyone who has tattered flags can bring them to VFW Post 2799 on South Range Road where they will be properly disposed of in a flag-burning ceremony at 4 p.m. Friday.
Milton zoning inspector
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township trustees have hired a new part-time zoning inspector. Nickolas D. Bellas of Warren will start Monday. Bellas also is a constable with the Vienna Township Police Department. He served for eight years with the Howland and Bazetta Police departments. Bellas received his master's degree in public administration and a graduate certificate in urban studies last year from the University of Akron.
Contract extended
CANFIELD -- The school board voted Wednesday to extend the contract of Treasurer Pattie Kesner for four years effective next January. The contract calls for Kesner to be paid $70,095 next year, the same she will be paid this year. Any raises would be based on the results of Kesner's annual personnel evaluation.
Man charged with robbery
HUBBARD -- A 44-year-old Youngstown man already charged with purse snatching is now charged by city police in another case. Detective Robert Altiere charged Larry Burt of Bott Street today with robbery. He is in the Mahoning County Jail, where he is being held in a purse snatching in Youngstown. Altiere said the victim was in the parking lot of the IGA store on West Liberty Street putting her groceries into the car. The robber drove up and, without getting out of the car, pushed the woman aside and took her purse out of the shopping cart and fled.
