WARREN -- Township police have arrested four people in the theft of copper wire from Warren Steel Holdings CSC. Keith Whitehead, 22, Bruce Clearwater, 20, Courtney Allgood, 18, and Jessie Tice, 23, all of Warren, were arrested on charges of breaking and entering and possession of criminal tools.
The four are being held in Trumbull County jail.
Since July, about 1,000 pounds of copper wiring has been stolen from the company, Lt. Don Bishop said.
Downtown design seminar
WARREN -- Warren Redevelopment and Planning will host a design seminar Saturday at the Comfort Inn on Courthouse Square, open to anyone with an interest in the vitality and revitalization of the downtown.
The event will be facilitated by WRAP, the city and the Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio.
From 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. will be an introduction and a review of background data. From 1:30 to 3:45 p.m. will be public input and group workshops with a review of group discussions and design ideas from 4 to 5 p.m.
The morning sessions will examine the past and present conditions of the downtown, and afternoon workshops, led by UDC's staff of architects and urban planners, will allow people to share their vision of the downtown's future.
The UDC design team will then prepare preliminary design sketches of ideas presented at the Saturday workshops. They will present and discuss the sketch plans from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Comfort Inn.
Open house at landfill
LORDSTOWN -- Lordstown Construction Recovery will host an open house for the community from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the facility's site on Newton Falls-Bailey Road.
The construction and demolition debris landfill, which has been in operation since last fall, will offer tours of the site and demonstrations of the screening and filtering process as well as demonstrations of the machinery, said Tim Page, operations manager.
Refreshments will be provided, Page added, and the first 250 visitors will receive a T-shirt and hat. LCR is a subsidiary company of Lafarge North America.
Bike trail funding
NILES -- The city's portion of the Lake to River Bike Trail is one step closer to reality.
Council Wednesday approved using about $62,900 from a projects fund to cover the city's portion of the costs.
The trail will run from the Mahoning County line in Weathersfield Township, along state Route 46 and then along abandoned CSX railroad tracks into downtown Niles.
In all, the 5-mile route is estimated to cost $1.8 million, and construction is set to begin in fiscal year 2006.
Man charged with robbery
HUBBARD -- A 44-year-old Youngstown man already charged with purse snatching is now charged by city police in another case. Detective Robert Altiere charged Larry Burt of Bott Street today with robbery. He is in the Mahoning County Jail where he is being held in connection with a purse snatching in Youngstown.
Altiere said the victim was in the parking lot of the IGA store on West Liberty Street putting her groceries into the car. The robber drove up and, without getting out of the car, pushed the woman aside and took her purse out of the shopping cart and fled.
A.P. O'Horo gets contract
YOUNGSTOWN -- A.P. O'Horo Co. of Youngstown was hired as general contractor for construction of a Walton Avenue bridge. County commissioners awarded a contract for $2,667,000.
Fall clothing giveaway
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Salvation Army will be conducting a fall clothing giveaway for needy people from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6, 7 and 8 at its headquarters at 1501 Glenwood Ave.
