Complaint filed against union

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County filed a complaint Wednesday with the State Employment Relations Board, alleging that the Mahoning Education Association of Developmental Disabilities conducted illegal picketing Tuesday.
About 100 members of the union held an informational picket outside the county courthouse and administration building, seeking support for resolution of their labor dispute.
Connie Pierce, county human resources director, said Ohio law requires unions that picket in support of a labor dispute to first file a notice with SERB of their intent to picket. Pierce said that was not done, so she filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the union.
The union members postponed a strike that was to have begun Sept. 1, and have been working without a contract on a day-to-day basis since then.
MEADD has 185 members including teachers, workshop and rehabilitation specialists, case managers, nurses and therapists at the county board of mental retardation and developmental disabilities.
