AL CENTRAL Young drives in five runs as Tigers thump Tribe
Dmitri Young went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer in an 11-3 blowout.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Dmitri Young set the standard for Detroit when it came to hitting and attire.
Young homered and matched his career high with five RBIs to power the Tigers over the Cleveland Indians 11-3 Tuesday night, stopping a four-game losing streak.
Then he gave Tigers outfielder Craig Monroe a tip.
"Fix your collar, Craig," Young said. "We're representing the City of Detroit. We're no rag team."
Young went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer in the fourth inning off Kyle Denney, who lost in his major league debut. It was the fourth five-RBI game of Young's career, the first since May 6 last year at Baltimore.
"It feels good to get some hits because I've hit a lot of balls hard, but right at people for the last month," Young said. "The big thing to me is watching the Detroit Tigers organization getting back respect. When you consider how dismal 2003 was, take a look now, we're a couple of pieces away from challenging."
Detroit went 43-119 a year ago, setting the AL record for losses.
Bonderman winner
Staked to a 9-1 lead, Jeremy Bonderman (10-11) improved to 4-1 with 42 strikeouts and a 2.00 ERA in his last five starts. The 21-year-old right-hander, 6-19 as a rookie a year ago, gave up three runs and six hits in 52/3 innings with seven strikeouts and four walks.
"It sure feels better this year," Bonderman said. "I felt like I would never get off six wins."
Detroit had 16 hits, three by Omar Infante, who also homered along with Jayson Smith and Brandon Inge.
"It was a big night for Dmitri, just what the doctor ordered," Tigers manager Alan Trammell said. "I would like to see us spread the runs around over a few games, but I'm not complaining."
Martinez connects
Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer for Cleveland, which has lost three in a row and eight of 11.
Denney, a 27-year-old right-hander who was 10-5 with a 4.41 ERA at Triple-A, allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 31/3 innings.
"I was obviously a little nervous," said Denney, who had four family members in the crowd. "Being nervous is something you get over after the first couple of pitches. I still had a job to do. It was not a very good outing on my part."
Young hit an RBI double in the first, and Smith's second-inning homer made it 2-0.
After Ronnie Belliard's run-scoring grounder in the second, Young singled in a run in the third, Monroe had an RBI triple and Inge a sacrifice fly that made it 5-1.
Infante, who went 3-for-4, opened the sixth with a homer off Jeremy Guthrie. Inge homered in the ninth.
