Volunteers prepare for new Habitat house
STRUTHERS -- For the third time this year, volunteers will break ground for a Habitat for Humanity home in Struthers.
This time, all funding and labor for the project will be provided by people from a single company, The Durr-Walbridge-Acco Consortium in partnership with General Motors, Lordstown.
The Durr Consortium, a German company with North American headquarters in Plymouth, Mich., is building the new paint shop at GM Lordstown. It has pledged 100 percent of the funding and labor, including code work, for the Habitat home to be built at 352 Woodbine St. Groundbreaking is slated for 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Sylvia Dixon and her seven children will live in the house once it is finished.
This is the fifth Habitat home built in Struthers, the 15th new Habitat house to be built in the Mahoning Valley this year.
The Durr Consortium is also building Habitat homes in Lansing, Mich., and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. The company builds one Habitat home in each community where it is building new automotive facilities.
This is the first time a single company has fully funded and pledged to provide all labor for construction of a Habitat home in the Mahoning Valley, according to Sally Gun, president of the local Habitat affiliate.
