YOUNGSTOWN -- A 64-year-old Indianola Avenue woman was struck in the left arm when shots were fired into her home after an apparent domestic dispute escalated into gunfire early today, according to police reports.
The victim, Frances Simmons, was found by police on her kitchen floor and taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where police said she was in stable condition this morning.
The shooting occurred at about 12:30 a.m. after two other people were beaten outside the victim's home by three assailants, who fired multiple shots into the house when they were leaving. The assailants fled on foot toward Cornell Street, Simmons told police.
Police found at least six bullet holes on the south side of Simmons' home.
Residents to discusscharter amendments
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three city residents will discuss the proposed city charter amendments on the November ballot at the Southern Boulevard Block Watch meeting.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic Parish Center, 3403 Southern Boulevard.
Josephine Hulett, Michael O'Hara and Maggy Lorenzi will discuss the amendments, which include changes in council staff, pay and term limits.
City officials to take field
NILES -- City council members, department heads and administrators in the Youngstown and Warren city governments will oppose each other in a softball game.
The two sides will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at Eastwood Field. Gates open at 5 p.m.
There will be no charge for parking or admission. Donations will be collected and turned over to the Relay for Life. Food and refreshments also will be sold.
Organizer Claire Maluso, Youngstown's Federal Plaza director, calls the game "an evening of friendly competition and sportsmanship."
