Petrie's three touchdowns keys Northern Iowa past Minnesota State
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) -- Tom Petrie threw three touchdown passes and Brian Wingert kicked four field goals, leading Northern Iowa to a 40-0 victory over Minnesota State on Saturday.
Petrie bounced back from a miserable performance in a season-opening loss to Iowa State to complete 16 of 26 passes for 201 yards with no interceptions. He connected on touchdown passes of 34 and 54 yards to Andy Thorn and threw a 7-yarder to James Lindgren.
Jim Lizzi carried 26 times for a career-high 145 yards for the Panthers (1-1), who lost to Iowa State 23-0 a week earlier. Petrie was just 8-for-19 for 63 yards in that game and Northern had only 99 total yards.
Against Division II Minnesota State (1-2), the Panthers amassed 549 yards, including 328 rushing.
Wingert kicked field goals of 30, 25 and 43 yards to help Northern Iowa build a 30-0 halftime lead. He added a 36-yarder in the third quarter.
Minnesota State managed just six first downs and 124 total yards.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A.J. Porter hit Kaya Farris for a 9-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining to give Southwest Missouri State the win.
The lead changed four times in the last 3:23 before Southwest Missouri (2-0) scored the winning touchdown.
