Wisconsin defense stuffs UNLV

Northwestern and Illinois suffered out-of-league losses.

MADISON, Wis. -- Jim Leonhard returned a blocked field goal 86 yards for a score and No. 21 Wisconsin used two safeties to hold off UNLV 18-3 Saturday.
Without running back Anthony Davis, who is out indefinitely with an eye injury, the Badgers' (2-0) offense sputtered and needed 10 possessions to get into the end zone on John Stocco's 5-yard touchdown toss to Darrin Charles with 12 minutes left.
The Rebels (0-2) had even more trouble moving the ball behind Shane Steichen, who replaced starter Kurt Nantkes (groin) in the first quarter.
No. 16 Iowa 17, Iowa St. 10
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Ed Hinkel made a diving, fingertip catch for a key touchdown and No. 16 Iowa stiffened on defense when it needed to most.
Iowa (2-0) forced Iowa State to kick field goals four times after the Cyclones had driven deep into Hawkeye territory. But Brian Jansen, a freshman walk-on, missed three of those kicks and Iowa held on for its second straight victory over the Cyclones after losing five in a row.
No. 25 Purdue 59, Ball State 7
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Kyle Orton threw for a career-high five touchdowns and ran for another to lead No. 25 Purdue over Ball State.
Orton completed his first 15 passes and threw for 329 yards in just over two quarters of work for Purdue (2-0), which posted its second straight dominating performance to open the season.
The Boilermakers scored touchdowns on six of their seven possessions in the first half, kicking a field goal on the other, to take a 45-0 lead at the break.
Arizona St. 30, Northwestern 21
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Andrew Walter threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns and Arizona State held Northwestern's tandem of quarterback Brett Basanez and receiver Jonathan Fields in check.
Walter connected with speedy wide receiver Derek Hagan for two long scoring plays that gave the Sun Devils (2-0) the lead for good in the first half, then hit Terry Richardson for a third-quarter touchdown that gave them a commanding 17-point advantage.
Minnesota 37, Illinois St. 21
MINNEAPOLIS -- Marion Barber III and Laurence Maroney each surpassed 100 yards rushing for the fifth time in 15 games together, and No. 22 Minnesota fought off Illinois State.
Barber rushed 18 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns, and Maroney ran 18 times for 141 yards and a score for the Gophers (1-0). Minnesota broke the game open with a pair of 80-yard TDs in a 2:08 span midway through the third quarter.
UCLA 35, Illinois 17
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Drew Olson threw three touchdown passes and Maurice Drew rushed for 142 yards to help UCLA snap a six-game losing streak.
Olson completed scoring passes of 41 and 14 yards to Craig Bragg in the first half and threw a 15-yard score to Maurice Lewis in the fourth quarter as the Bruins snapped a string of losses dating back to last Nov. 1.
Michigan St. 24, Cent. Michigan 7
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State quarterbacks Stephen Reaves and Drew Stanton both made just enough plays to help the Spartans beat Central Michigan.
Reaves started and was 9-of-19 for 183 yards with a touchdown in his college debut. Stanton was just 1-of-3 for 9 yards, but he ran for 38 yards on a fourth-and-1 late in the game for the Spartans (1-1).
