YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Ohio soldiers, one formerly of Youngstown and another from the Sandusky area, have been killed in Iraq.
Army Staff Sgt. Elvis Bourdon, 36, a 1988 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, died Monday in Baghdad when his military vehicle came under attack by enemy forces using small-arms fire and grenades, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Friday.
He was on patrol in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle. No one else in the armored troop carrier was killed in the afternoon attack, Department of Defense sources said.
Bourdon, who also had attended South High School, was assigned as an infantryman to Company C, 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas.
A Defense spokesman said Bourdon had no immediate family members in Ohio, but would not release the names or locations of family members.
Also from Ohio
The military informed the family of Jason Sparks, 19, of Monroeville, that he was killed in Iraq, said his aunt, Becky Sparks. She said the family doesn't know how he died.
The Defense Department has not released any public information about Sparks, an Army public affairs duty officer.
By law, the Pentagon must wait at least 24 hours after notifying the family of a death before making a public announcement.
Sparks was reported to be serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment training in Kuwait, a staging area for many troops headed to Iraq.
