Ohio Citizen Corps seeks volunteers



YOUNGSTOWN -- Ohio Citizen Corps will launch its first Citizen Corps Sign-Up Day event throughout Ohio today.
The event honors the memory of lives lost or those injured in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, as well as those first responders who risk their lives every day.
On Sign-Up Day, citizens will be recruited for community-based volunteer programs designed to help first responders in crime, disaster and terrorism response and prevention, event organizers said.
Ohio Citizen Corps has partnered with McDonald's and the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office for this event. About 700 sign-up locations are available, and most will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Locally, the following McDonald's will host volunteer recruiters: Canfield, 586 E. Main St.; Youngstown, 570 Fifth Ave.; Poland, 900 Western Reserve Road; and Boardman, 1110 Boardman-Poland Road (noon to 2 p.m. only).
The Citizen Corps effort is being shared by five organizations in Ohio: The Ohio Community Service Council; the Ohio Emergency Management Agency; the Ohio Volunteer Center Association; Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters; and the Ohio Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. The statewide organizing body is the Ohio Citizen Corps Council.
