Hiring report delayed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A report on the process used by Youngstown State University to hire a forensic science professor will not be finished until next week at the earliest. The report was originally due Friday. But the report is taking longer than initially anticipated, said Ron Cole, YSU spokesman.
The Vindicator asked YSU last month to provide documents used to determine the best of the 16 applicants for the $48,000-a-year full-time job. YSU President David Sweet ordered a review of the process. Joseph Serowik was hired even though his previous work as an examiner in the Cleveland Police Department lab is being scrutinized after his role in a man's wrongful imprisonment.
Clark to speak at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- Retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination this year, will speak Sunday at Youngstown State University's Beeghly Center.
Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., and Clark is expected to speak at 2 p.m. The event is free. Clark is scheduled to speak about military families and veterans. The event is being coordinated by local Democratic officials and the Kerry-Edwards campaign. Clark is a surrogate speaker for U.S. Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee.
Seeking a consortium
BOARDMAN -- Trustee Kathy Miller is calling for the establishment of a consortium of local communities to develop a stormwater management and watershed action plan. The Mahoning Valley has been hit by heavy rainfall this summer and summer 2003, causing flooding. Miller said the consortium should be led by the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments. The trustee says it doesn't make financial sense for various communities and entities to hire their own group of experts to address this issue.
Issues on agenda
HUBBARD -- Hubbard Planning and Zoning Commission will discuss two items at its meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in council chambers in the municipal building.
The commission will continue discussion on the naming of streets in Pine Lake Estates' phase one street layout and revisit, for information only, the developer's update on Pine Lakes Estates planned unit development and neighbor's concerns about that development.
