Start of championship series remains a N.Y.-Penn mystery
NILES -- One thing for sure, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers will not play in the New York-Penn League's championship series tonight.
Just what day the Scrappers will open the series is yet to be determined.
The Scrappers swept a best-of-three semifinal series with the Auburn Doubledays earlier this week and will meet the winner of the Brooklyn-Tri-City semifinal.
Brooklyn and Tri-City split their first two games, but the third and deciding game was rained out on Wednesday and Thursday.
Those two teams will try again tonight.
Schedule revision
This morning, a conference call was scheduled with the general manager of the Scrappers, Dave Smith, and the GMs of the two other remaining teams to revise the playoff schedule.
The first game of the title series will be contested at Eastwood Field and the Scrappers would play the remaining games on the road.
If the other semifinal winner will waive the off day, action could start Saturday at 7:05 p.m. If not, then play could get under way Sunday.
Since both the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers play at home Sunday afternoon, the Scrappers may ask the NYPL to start its Sunday game at 7 p.m.
Tickets that have been purchased for tonight's game will be honored in the first game of the championship series.
