Sobriety checkpoint
LIBERTY -- The Trumbull County Operating a Vehicle Impaired Task Force says a sobriety checkpoint will be set up tonight on state Route 193 at the former Kmart store. The checkpoint will begin at 9:30 p.m. and run through 1:30 a.m. Saturday. It is part of the national "You Drink and Drive You Lose" campaign.
Kim Peters, task force coordinator, said officers will be conducting a roadside check of drivers for alcohol and drug impairment.
In 2003, there were 399 alcohol-related crashes in the county, 15 of which were fatal.
Meeting date changed
McDONALD -- The board of education has changed the date of its regular meeting for September.
The board, which usually meets the third Monday of each month, will meet instead at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the high school library.
Toy run for mission
LEAVITTSBURG -- The Bike Riders Main Concern Inc. is sponsoring a toy run to benefit the Warren Family Mission.
The event begins with signup from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at The Castle, 571 Homeview Ave.
All vehicles may participate at a cost of $10 or the donation of a new toy.
Riders will return by 5 p.m. A disc jockey will entertain from 4 to 8 p.m. and food and beverages will be available.
Representatives from the mission will be on site to accept donations.
Official softball game
NILES -- Council members, department heads and administrators in the Youngstown and Warren city governments will oppose each other in a softball game.
The two sides will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 at Eastwood Field. Gates open at 5 p.m.
There will be no charge for parking or admission. Donations will be collected and turned over to the Relay for Life. Food and refreshments also will be sold.
Organizer Claire Maluso, Youngstown's Federal Plaza director, calls the game "an evening of friendly competition and sportsmanship."
Chili cook-off planned
VIENNA -- The next meeting of the Vienna Township Neighborhood Watch will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the town hall. Plans are being made for a chili cook-off scheduled for Oct. 11 at the fire station.
Mahoning Co. flood aid
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County residents who sustained property damage during heavy rains Wednesday and Thursday are being asked by county officials to report the damage by using the county's nonemergency number, 211, to call Help Hotline.
Volunteers will take information to assist county officials in compiling an assessment of damage, said Walter Duzzny, director of the county emergency management agency.
Office burglarized
YOUNGSTOWN -- Drugs and office equipment were taken between 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. Thursday from 3610 Market St., the office of Dr. Muhammad I. Khan, reports show.
The thief made a hole in the door to reach in and unlock the deadbolt. The drugs Ambien (80 pills), Prozac (60 pills) and Zoloft (112 pills) were taken, as was a clock, paper shredder, typewriter, phone and answering machine, police said.
Language lessons
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three levels of German, plus beginning French and Italian will be offered at four locations.
Level 1 German, Italian and French will be offered Wednesdays at Hubbard High School, Thursdays at Austintown Fitch High School and Mondays at Poland Union Schools.
Levels 1 and 2 German and Italian will be offered Tuesdays at Hermitage (Pa.) Middle School.
Level 3 German will be at Austintown only.
These classes are for pupils from 12 years old through adults. Classes begin Sept. 27. Call (330) 758-0361 for class and book fees and times.
ACT courses planned
The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield, and Kinko's, 48 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman, will be the sites for a series of courses designed to help students prepare for the ACT college admissions test.
The courses will meet for five Sundays beginning Sunday. Times will be 10:30 a.m. to 1:05 p.m. at The Ursuline Center and 6:30 to 9:05 p.m. at Kinko's.
Tuition for the 13 hours of classes is $159. Materials will include workbooks with real ACT questions. The ACT will be administered Oct. 23.
