NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Almost $7,000 was raised by Pizza Joe's in Ohio and Pennsylvania for the American Cancer Society. Locations in Lawrence, Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties donated 10 percent of their pizza sales every Monday in the month of July for the charity.
Armed woman robber
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A woman wielding a gun got an undisclosed amount of money from the Tic Toc Food Mart on Mount Jackson Road. Pennsylvania State Police said the woman came into the convenience store at 9:15 p.m. Monday and demanded money. A description of the woman was not available from police.
UW caring in Lawrence
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- About 100 volunteers were part of the United Way Day of Caring in Lawrence County. Employees from 18 companies and area schools completed a variety of duties Thursday. They included painting, cleaning, landscaping and reading to children. Major sponsors were Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Social Workers Union and the American Federation of State and Municipal Employees.
Paving contract
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Farrell City Council hired Sharon Paving and Construction to pave two streets, parts of four alleys and two catch basins. The company will be paid $102,297. Streets to be paved are French Street between Wallis and Fruit streets and Darr Avenue between Steven and Negley streets. Council also approved a $27,500 change order for Hillside Industrial Park project. The money will pay for the demolition of six buildings.
Mahoning Co. flood aid
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County residents who sustained property damage during heavy rains Wednesday and Thursday are being asked by county officials to report the damage by using the county's nonemergency number, 211, to call Help Hotline. Volunteers will take information to assist county officials in compiling an assessment of damage, said Walter Duzzny, director of the county emergency management agency.
Dr.'s office burglarized
YOUNGSTOWN -- Drugs and office equipment were taken between 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. Thursday from 3610 Market St., the office of Dr. Muhammad I. Khan, reports show. The thief made a hole in the door to reach in and unlock the deadbolt. The drugs Ambien (80 pills), Prozac (60 pills) and Zoloft (112 pills) were taken, as was a clock, paper shredder, typewriter, phone and answering machine, police said.
Language lessons
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three levels of German, plus beginning French and Italian will be offered at four locations. Level 1 German, Italian and French will be offered Wednesdays at Hubbard High School, Thursdays at Austintown Fitch High School and Mondays at Poland Union Schools. Levels 1 and 2 German and Italian will be offered Tuesdays at Hermitage (Pa.) Middle School. Level 3 German will be at Austintown only. These classes are for pupils from 12 years old through adults. ACT courses planned
The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield, and Kinko's, 48 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman, will be the sites for a series of courses designed to help students prepare for the ACT college admissions test. The courses will meet for five Sundays beginning Sunday. Times will be 10:30 a.m. to 1:05 p.m. at The Ursuline Center and 6:30 to 9:05 p.m. at Kinko's. Tuition for the 13 hours of classes is $159. Arrested in assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tommy Robinson, 30, of Pembrook Road, Austintown, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. today on charges of aggravated assault and criminal damaging after a confrontation with a bouncer at The Mixx, a bar on West Hylda Avenue, police said.
Robinson, who acted disorderly in the bar and was asked to leave, punched and kicked the bouncer before being escorted out, reports show. Robinson came back with what witnesses described as a sword and tried to re-enter, yelling that he would kill the bouncer and kicking out a window at the bar, police said.
He left in a blue minivan that Austintown police stopped as it entered the Pembrook apartment complex. They turned Robinson over to a city police officer. The officer seized a knife from Robinson.
