MLS ROUNDUP Wednesday's game
Crew 1, Earthquakes 0
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Tony Sanneh scored his first MLS goal in six years, helping Columbus extend its unbeaten streak to 12 games. Sanneh, who spent the past six seasons playing for FC Nurnberg and Hertha Berlin in Germany, scored 56 seconds into stoppage time, knocking in a free kick from Simon Elliott from about 8 yards. Sanneh, a member of the United States' 2002 World Cup team, scored his last MLS goal at San Jose on June 3, 1998, as a member of D.C. United. The Earthquakes had their five-game unbeaten streak snapped in front of a season-low crowd of 7,137 at Spartan Stadium. The first half produced few scoring chances. The Earthquakes had just one -- a shot by Chris Brown that hit the crossbar in the 15th minute. The Crew's best chance came in the 26th minute, when Chris Wingert fired a 30-yard shot that San Jose goalkeeper Jon Conway pushed wide. Both teams were short-handed, as six players missed the game to play for their respective countries in World Cup qualifying. San Jose's Landon Donovan and Brian Ching and the Crew's Frankie Hejduk were in Panama for the U.S. team's qualifier. Canadians Pat Onstad and Dwayne De Rosario of San Jose and the Crew's Erick Scott (Costa Rica) were in Costa Rica for a game.
