I-79, I-80 lane closures
OIL CITY, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said there will be lane closures on Interstate 79 and Interstate 80 in Mercer County for a period of time. The northbound and southbound lanes of I-79 at the Grove City interchange to Lawrence County will be closed at various locations for sign installation and other work. The eastbound and westbound lanes of I-80 from mile marker zero to mile marker 7 will be closed for paving work. The paving will take place at the state Route 60 interchange with I-80 westbound.
Western Reserve closing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Engineer Richard A. Marsico said Western Reserve Road, between Hitchcock and New Buffalo roads, was to close again today for completion of a construction project. The road was reopened temporarily last week to accommodate traffic for the Canfield Fair. Marsico said it will remain closed until November, when the project should be substantially completed.
Recycling drop-offs
BOARDMAN -- A Mahoning County Recycling Division recycling drop-off site at Shields Road and Lockwood Boulevard in Boardman Township will reopen Friday. The site was closed a year ago to accommodate construction at the township fire station. A temporary drop-off site that had been set up at the township administration complex on Market Street will remain open permanently. The recycling division also has a third Boardman drop-off site in the parking lot of the Pat Catan store, 6151 South Ave.
Treatment program grads
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fourteen youths were to graduate today from treatment programs at Mahoning County Juvenile Court. Six were to graduate from the drug treatment court, five from the day reporting program and three from a 90-day residential substance abuse treatment program. Youngstown Councilman Artis Gillam, D-1st, was to be the guest speaker.
Burglary at tavern
YOUNGSTOWN -- A hole made in the middle of the front door at Southern Tavern, 1508 Glenwood Avenue, set off the alarm at 2:47 a.m. today. When police arrived a few minutes later, they found that the jukebox had been smashed to remove the coin box. The owner was expected to inventory the business today to determine whether anything else was taken.
Burglary, assault charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Kesa Hinson, 21, of Kenmore Avenue was arrested on charges of aggravated burglary and felonious assault after a stabbing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at a house in the 300 block of East LaClede Avenue. Police said Hinson ran into the house with a steak knife in one hand and can of pepper spray in the other. She stabbed Suzzette Torres, 15, of Roxbury Avenue, and then the resident, Kenneth Whatley, 20, used some sort of metal object to smack Hinson on the right side of her face, reports show. Hinson and Torres were both treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Drug trafficking arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Nine packaged-for-sale bags of suspected crack cocaine were found in a hanging planter when vice cops entered 212 Thornton Ave. with a search warrant at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, reports show. Police arrested the resident, Keith Dreher, 34, on a charge of aggravated trafficking in crack.
Man faces gun charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Vice cops using a search warrant at 153 Kenmore Avenue at 5 p.m. Tuesday heard three loud gunshots north of their location and saw a man with a rifle enter a house in the 100 block of West Myrtle Avenue. Karl Jones, 18, of Williamson Avenue was arrested on charges of discharging a firearm in city limits and possession of a deadly weapon in a school safety zone. Police said Hillman Elementary and New Hope Academy are close by and a large group of juveniles were at football practice at Hillman. Jones told police that he just bought the gun and wanted to test fire it. Police recovered one live and three spent rounds in the rear yard.
