Fire in Cope's Concessions
CANFIELD -- A fire at Cope's Concessions trailer Sunday morning caused minimal damage but the concessionaire couldn't reopen immediately.
Roger Cope, owner of Cope's Concessions, which has been selling lamb and chicken gyros, french fries, lemon shakes, cheeseburgers and beverages at the fair since 1998, discovered one wall of his stand smoldering about 10:30 a.m. and immediately turned a fire extinguisher on it, said Don Hutchison, Canfield deputy fire chief.
By the time firefighters arrived, the fire was out, he said. To ensure the fire wouldn't rekindle, firefighters removed the wallboard behind Cope's grill.
"It appears the grill heated the wall and caught the inside of the wall on fire," Hutchison said. Within half an hour, firefighters returned to their post on the fairgrounds.
Three Mahoning County fire departments station squads at the fair every day. Austintown firefighters responded to Cope's fire. Cope's is at 93 Poland Drive.
The concessionaire said he was very pleased with firefighters' quick response and the care they took in removing the wallboard
"That's a brand-new trailer and they could have taken an ax to it, but they were very careful," Cope said.
He was planning to replace the damaged trailer with another one not currently in use.
