BETTER CHOICES Less fat, sugar

College students can take a number of steps to make their eating choices more healthful. A few suggestions:
Grab fruit or vegetable juices at campus stores or vending machines; for snacks, choose pretzels, high-fiber granola bars, baked chips or nuts.
Go easy on butter and syrup with pancakes, bagels and rolls. Try fruit or jam.
When ordering a sandwich, ask for a whole-wheat bun. Choose mustard and ketchup over mayo and special sauces.
Pay attention to portion size. Order the small burger; hold the cheese.
Eat grilled or charbroiled chicken, not fried.
Substitute fruit or salad for fries.
At salad bars, choose colorful vegetables. Skip or take small portions of cheese, ham and bacon bits. Go easy on the dressings.
Try topping a baked potato with salsa, fresh vegetables or yogurt. Skip the butter and bacon bits.
Pizza is healthier if you load up on vegetables and skip the extra cheese. Canadian bacon is a better choice than pepperoni or sausage.
