Shock 66, Sting 58
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Swin Cash scored 17 points and Cheryl Ford had 10 points and 14 rebounds to lead Detroit past Charlotte. Ruth Riley added 13 points for the defending champion Shock (14-15), who ended a two-game losing streak and are battling to make the playoffs. Deanna Nolan added 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Dawn Staley and Charlotte Smith-Taylor had 16 points apiece for the Sting (13-15), who shot 37 percent and blew a 10-point lead. Detroit overcame 17 turnovers in a physical game that included a technical foul on Riley for throwing an elbow during a rebound. Staley's ensuing free throw cut Detroit's lead to 49-47 with 5:54 left. But Riley, playing with a wrap on a bruised right elbow, responded with a free throw and a short jumper to put the Shock back ahead by five. Cash's consecutive layups gave Detroit a 58-49 lead with 3:07 left. The Shock outrebounded the Sting 37-19. They swept the season series 3-0 and clinched a possible tiebreaker in the tightly bunched Eastern Conference. Charlotte raced out to a 23-13 lead in part because of six early Detroit turnovers. Detroit recovered to tie the game at 27 by halftime, holding the Sting scoreless for more than four minutes in a 14-4 run. Merlakia Jones, who had 10 points, made a jumper that capped an 8-0 run to put Detroit ahead to stay at 45-40 with 10:20 remaining.
