Trucking company pays penalty for hazardous material spill in Pa.

WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- A New Jersey trucking company has paid a $10,568 state penalty for a March 10 hazardous material spill in Shenango Township.
Jevic Transportation Inc. paid the penalty for a cleaning solution spill that got into Hogback Run, killing an estimated 15,000 fish, said Kelly Burch, regional director for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
A Jevic tractor trailer overturned on an Interstate 80 ramp in Shenango Township, spilling about 1,500 gallons of an industrial cleaning solution. The spill impacted nearly two miles of the stream, which is a Shenango River tributary, Burch said.
A significant amount of soil was contaminated by the spill and Jevic also paid for cleanup crews to excavate the soil and dispose of it at an appropriate facility.
While the immediate impact of the spill was deadly for aquatic life in the stream, no lasting effect is anticipated because the chemical components dissipated within a matter of days, according to Burch.
She said Jevic was cited for discharging industrial waste into waters of the commonwealth without a state permit or approval.
The penalty money goes into the state's Clean Water Fund which helps finance cleanups and water-quality improvements in the state.
