CAMPBELL -- It had been 11 years since Campbell and Girard had met on a high school football field.
Friday night, the two old Mahoning Valley Conference rivals saw the Indians' Brett Dutton score five times as Girard defeated the Red Devils 42-26.
Dutton had four scores on the ground and added another on an interception return as he picked up 152 yards rushing on 31 carries.
Girard quarterback Bobby Ovesny was 7 of 18 passing for 131 yards and added 51 yards rushing on five carries and a touchdown.
Johnson leads Red Devils
The Indians needed all the points they put on the board as Campbell quarterback Derrell Johnson had a huge evening. Johnson had 197 yards rushing on 23 carries with three touchdowns, and he added 8 of 20 passing for 157 yards more and another score. For the game the junior had 354 yards of total offense.
Campbell (0-2) held the Indians on downs at the Red Devil 22 on the initial drive of the game.
Campbell then got a big break when Johnson had a pass go off the hands of intended receiver David Garcia and defender Ryan Collins before falling into the hands of Nick Garcia, who took the ball for a 49-yard gain. Johnson then scored on a 34-yard run and Antoni Zembillas kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Campbell lead.
Indians answer
Girard came right back as a 50-yard pass from Ovesny to Ryan Tolone set up the first Dutton score of the night from 6 yards out. Eric Stevens kicked the first of his six points-after and the score was tied 7-7 after one quarter.
Girard scored the go-ahead touchdown on a nine play, 68-yard drive as Dutton scored on a 3-yard run. After a John Bennett interception of a Johnson pass gave the ball to Girard at the Campbell 46, the Indians used six plays to up their advantage to 21-7 on Ovesny's 7-yard run.
Campbell got back into the game as it scored with just 34 seconds to play in the half. Johnson hit D.J. Roseta with a scoring strike from 29 yards out and the Indians led 21-14 at the break.
Big third quarter
Dutton capped off the first Indian drive of the second half with a 1-yard burst to move the lead to 28-14, then with Johnson out of the game with a injury, he intercepted a pass from Demitrus Dawson and returned it 40 yards for his fourth score of the game and a 35-14 Indian lead.
Johnson returned to the game and led a nine-play, 61-yard drive that ended with his 1-yard run for the touchdown. The extra-point kick failed and Girard held a 35-20 lead after three quarters.
Johnson then exploded with a 48-yard run with 10:14 to go in the game. However, the Campbell try for a two-point conversion failed and the Indians led 35-26.
The Indians drove down to the Campbell 16 where the Red Devils defense held on downs, giving the ball back to their offense with 6:09 to play.
After a holding penalty set the Red Devils back to the 5-yard line, Johnson had a pass intercepted by Tolone, who returned it to the Campbell 3-yard line. Dutton scored his fifth touchdown on a 2-yard run for the final score.
