PREP SOCCER Boardman turns back Howland 5-1
Mooney blanked Mentor Lake Catholic, 5-0.
BOARDMAN -- Seniors Enriques Urritua and Jeremy Winters had two goals apiece while junior Sam Stoll added another goal, as the Boardman High boys soccer team defeated Howland, 5-1, Saturday.
Boardman (1-2-1) took a 3-0 lead before Howland's John Ross scored.
Mooney 5, Mentor Lake Catholic 0
STRUTHERS -- Kiki Willis scored four goals and Zack Hernan added one for the Cardinals (5-0) in the game played at the Tri-County Soccer Complex.
Sean Sullivan, Nick Lutz and Alecko Frangopoulos each had an assist.
East Palestine 6, Chaney 2
EAST PALESTINE -- Ricky Plum scored two goals, while Jordan Meuse, Alex Duncan, Brandon Hull and Josh Kiglles added one each for the Bulldogs (2-1-1).
Justin Hilbert and Sean McQuiston each scored for the Cowboys (1-2-1).
Warren Harding 5, Champion 5
WARREN -- John Emery scored three goals and Chris Palm supported the attack with two goals for the Golden Flashes. For Harding, Omar Omar scored twice and Aaron Elder, Dante Pennachio and Chris Penman each had a goal.
Canfield 2, Northwest 2
CANFIELD -- The Cardinals' second goal was scored by senior Ryan Connors on an assist from junior Graham Shryock, which ended up forcing the tie.
Canfield goalie Mike Musilli tallied 14 saves, while Northwest goalie Alex Rennick finished with 12 saves.
Liberty 8, Maplewood 1
LIBERTY -- Junior Ron Hunkus had three goals, while sophomore Brian Sehon added two and Ryan Karson, Max Alper and Jim Kelley one apiece for Liberty (1-2).
The Leopards led 5-0 at halftime and 8-0 until the last 10 minutes when sophomore Ryan Bell scored for Maplewood (0-3).
Liberty goalie Jeremy Hume had six saves, while Gavin Switzer and Kevin Harris split time in goal for the Rockets with five and 11 saves, respectively.
Heartland Christian 3,Portersville Christian 2
COLUMBIANA -- Freshman Derek Patterson had two goals, senior Blake Kozma had one goal and junior Mike Barborak had two assists for Heartland (2-2).
Sophomore Cody Patterson had 16 saves for the Lions (2-2), who led 2-1 at halftime until Derek Patterson's go-ahead boot with 15:00 remaining snapped a 2-2 tie.
Girls
CHAMPION -- Senior Colleen Moran had two goals, while juniors Mandy Reardon and Sarah Anderson and senior Julie Noll had one apiece as Poland defeated Warren JFK 5-0.
Freshman goalie Pam Shure had five saves for the Bulldogs (2-0).
Jen Gilmore had eight saves for Warren JFK (3-1-1).
Lakeview 9, Girard 0
CORTLAND -- Paige Poulis scored four goals with one assist to pace the Bulldogs (2-1). Alli Nero, Nikki Bevilacqua, Britni Morello, Jen Baker and Julie Ulam added a goal apiece. Lakeview had 26 shots on goal and Girard had five.
Ashley Esposito, goalkeeper for Girard (1-4), had 14 saves.
Fitch 1, Green 1, tie
AUSTINTOWN -- Green's Julie Devus scored the tying goal on an assist from Natalie Burch in the second half. Fitch had taken a 1-0 lead in the opening period on Jodi Bowlen's goal on a penalty kick. Fitch (2-1-2) goalie Cara Calai had 10 saves.
Green (2-0-2) goalie Stacy Messner had four saves.
Howland 4, Boardman 0
HOWLAND -- Kayla Martin, Annastacia Filippidis, Melissa Kohn and Erin Gilmour scored goals for the Tigers (1-0-2), while Kohn, Karen Phillips, Gilmour and Filippidis recorded assists.
Howland outshot the Spartans (1-4), 23-9. Spartan keeper Lani Vlad had 14 saves.
