McConnell's Mill
An array of nature programs will be taking place this weekend and next at McConnell's Mill State Park, near Portersville, Pa.
Smokey Bear: Someone dressed as Smokey Bear will be on hand from 1-2 p.m. today in the Kildoo picnic area and the Old Mill to shake hands and greet people. He will be accompanied by members of the Slippery Rock Township Volunteer Fire Department. Parents are encouraged to bring cameras.
Tree Trek: This hour-long walk in the woods, beginning at 1 p.m. Monday in the Hell's Hollow parking lot, will allow participants to identify oaks, hazels and other types of trees in the area, as well as various facts about them.
Owl Prowl: A naturalist will conduct this 11/2-hour event starting at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Hell's Hollow parking lot. Those interested will have a chance to learn about owls in Pennsylvania, their habitats and lifestyles. Bring a red-covered flashlight and insect repellent.
It's For the Birds!: This discussion will focus on bird feeding and will feature a demonstration of various bird feeders that can be made from recycled items. Meet at 2 p.m. next Sunday in the Mill courtyard.
The park also offers two half-hour corn-grinding demonstrations starting at 1 and 3 p.m. Two 45-minute Historic Grist Mill tours, which take participants through the history of how grain was made into flour, are also available beginning at 2 and 4 p.m. Both events are on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as Labor Day.
