OHIO Family and friends hold memorial for counselors
Lindsay Cutshall's father shared an entry from his daughter's journal.
COSHOCTON, Ohio (AP) -- Two Christian camp counselors killed on a California beach were remembered Saturday by family and friends for their love of God and nature.
"I learned how to make God real in my life every day though her," fellow camp counselor Carrie Zeager said of Lindsay Cutshall.
Cutshall, 23, of Fresno, Ohio, and her fianc & eacute;, Jason Allen, 26, of Zeeland, Mich., were found Aug. 18 on a secluded beach along the central California coast. Both had been shot in the head while lying in sleeping bags. Investigators have no suspects.
Zeager was among several counselors from the Christian adventure camp in California where Cutshall and Allen worked who flew to Ohio for the memorial.
About 300 people packed a church in this eastern Ohio town, near Cutshall's hometown. Her father, Chris, is minister at Fresno Bible Church, but the memorial was moved to a larger church to accommodate all the mourners.
Father spoke
Chris Cutshall spoke the longest among the dozen speakers and said his ability to keep his composure, and even make some jokes, came from a divine strength.
At one point, Cutshall read from an entry in his daughter's journal in which she wrote about wanting to be less materialistic.
"When she wrote this, she was living in a tent," Cutshall said.
Aaron Daly, who also worked as a camp counselor, talked about how Cutshall often comforted a troubled young camper late at night, even after a long day of work.
"She knew it was important. And what is important is not sleep. This earth is but a vapor," Daly said.
Chris Cutshall shared entries from Allen's journal, apparently written as the couple was on the beach where they were later killed.
"God gives me the privilege in life," Cutshall read, "and he has given me a wonderful woman to enjoy it with."
A memorial for Allen was held Aug. 28 in Michigan.
