Fired deputy sues
MEADVILLE, Pa. (AP) -- A former Crawford County deputy sheriff claimed in a lawsuit that he was fired because he got a campaign sign for his boss's opponent and gave it to another former department employee.
Sheriff Robert M. Stevens fired Shawn Ashbaugh on Feb. 23. Ashbaugh claims he was fired because Ashbaugh was asked to get a campaign sign for Stevens' opponent, Ed Carter, and did so.
Ashbaugh is seeking his job back, unspecified damages and legal fees.
Stevens declined to comment.
The suit said the U.S. Constitution gives Ashbaugh the right to support any candidate for office. Party affiliation or the support of a particular candidate for sheriff is not an appropriate requirement for employment," the suit stated.
Family opposes charges
ALIQUIPPA, Pa. (AP) -- The family of a man who died when he was run over by a firetruck urged police to not pursue charges against the driver, saying the episode was an accident.
"We are against the charges," said Beverly Vinisky, the mother of David Vinisky, 49, who was killed Aug. 25. "I always thought a crime was something you do against a person or property on purpose. An accident is an accident. Everybody in our family feels that way."
Frank Brocklebank, 40, of Raccoon Township, was charged Tuesday with causing a fatal accident while not properly licensed, a felony.
Brocklebank was behind the wheel of a new firetruck at the Raccoon Township Volunteer Fire Department when he backed over Vinisky and another firefighter as they were taking pictures of the truck, authorities said.
