HOMICIDE PROBE Detectives look into man's past after corpse is found in house

DAYTON (AP) -- Police are investigating the past of a man who faces charges related to a body found in his basement.
Matthew Morgan Caddy, 52, has been jailed since Thursday on charges of gross abuse of a corpse, possession of criminal tools and tampering with evidence in the death of Daniel Rodney Everson.
The body of the 43-year-old victim, who was reported missing in late July by his family in Litchfield, Minn., was found Tuesday in Caddy's home by police.
The Montgomery County coroner's office has not ruled on the cause of death. Detectives are investigating it as a homicide and looking into Caddy's past, Sgt. Gary White said Friday.
White said he believed Everson and Caddy met via the Internet.
Convictions
Caddy, under the name Stephen Lee MacFarland, was convicted in 1977 of sexual battery and kidnapping. He legally changed his name in 1984.
Caddy -- then known as MacFarland -- faced charges 27 years ago after police said he lured his employee at the Suicide Prevention Center to his apartment.
MacFarland was indicted on charges of aggravated robbery, rape and kidnapping, then pleaded no contest to the lesser sexual battery and kidnapping charges.
In May 1978, a judge gave MacFarland a suspended prison sentence and placed him on probation. The judge suspended the probation in February 1980 on the recommendation of MacFarland's probation officer.
