WARREN -- Warren JFK's speedy backs, Tony Elzy and Jack Henderson, ripped through a Struthers defense that seemed to be looking for answers all night.
The Eagles returned the opening kickoff for the first touchdown, and JFK went on to roll past Struthers 47-16 Friday at Mollenkopf Stadium.
The Eagles let their legs do the work. Their running game was led by Elzy's monster day. He racked up 224 yards on 21 carries and sat out most of the second half.
"Anthony and Jack are two great backs, and they had great games," said Warren JFK coach Tony Napolet.
He also gave credit to his offensive line.
"They just held all night, and having two nice backs doesn't hurt," Napolet said.
Pete Pirone Jr., first-year coach of Struthers, endured another disappointment after last week's loss to Libert, and went home with some key injuries.
Struthers has injuries
Eric Anderson, Struthers' workhorse in the backfield last week, left with an injured arm, and Jim Kribel, starting wide receiver, had to be carted away after hurting his leg.
"We knew it was going to be physical. It always is with this match-up," said Pirone. "We had some mental mistakes, and that's my fault as head coach."
The Wildcats put together an impressive drive to start the second half, and seemed poised to make it a game. They pounded the ball on the ground through an impressive Eagle defense, and capped it off with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Wildcat quarterback Mike Duponty to Matt Kukura.
But the Eagles were just too much to hold off. JFK's next drive included a 45-yard gain by Elzy and ended when Henderson scampered into the end zone from 20 yards out.
Fumble sets up score
Struthers' next drive never even got started. The opening snap of the possession squirted onto the field and JFK recovered at the Struthers' 28-yard line. That led to an 18-yard run by Henderson to bring them within striking distance, and Elzy capped it off with a 3-yard touchdown run.
JFK also had another motivation. Last year, Struthers handed the Eagles one of their three losses.
"We just wanted to get win number two," said Napolet. "We're looking ahead to next week."
