ARTS COUNCIL IS TAKING NOMINATIONS FOR GRANTS
Arts Council is taking nominations for grants
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio Arts Council is collecting nominations for the 2005 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio. Awards are given annually to Ohio individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions to the arts statewide, regionally and nationally. Relaxation workshop at Treat Yourself
CANFIELD -- Registration is under way for a "Relax with Rhythm" workshop at Treat Yourself, 3837 Starr Center Drive. Participants will learn to use drums, bells and crystal bowls to reduce stress, increase energy and enhance concentration skills. Sessions will be from 7:30- 9 p.m. Friday and again Oct. 8 and Nov. 5. Instruments are available. Cost is $20 for all three or $8 per session. Call Pam Susany at (330) 424-7108 for information.
Musicians to perform
YOUNGSTOWN -- American folk musician Charlie King and singer-guitarist Karen Brandow will perform in a Universal Cafe bonus concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at First Unitarian Church, 1105 Elm St. Cost is $12 in advance, $15 at the door, with discounts for senior citizens. Tickets also are available for a light buffet and "'60s Sing-a-Long" after the concert.
King is a recording artist and songwriter whose material has been performed by Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and other folk artists. Brandow, his musical partner since 1998, did human-rights work for eight years in Central America.
Hungarian festival
HIRAM -- The Hungarian Cultural Center of Northeastern Ohio, 12027 Abbott Road, will be the setting for a fall festival and picnic Sunday.
Music by Joe Jeromos and the Tokay Orchestra will be featured from 2-6 p.m., Hungarian dances will be performed by St. Elizabeth Festival Dancers at 3:30 p.m. and the Brownie Troop of Shalersville will entertain at 5. Hungarian foods will be available.
Gates open at noon and admission is $4. Children ages 16 and under are admitted free.
'Annie' benefit show set
NILES -- A special performance of the musical "Annie," at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at Trumbull New Theatre, will benefit Kiwanis Club of Vienna. Tickets are $15 each, including refreshments. Call (330) 856-1461 for tickets. The theater is at 5883 Youngstown-Warren Road, near Eastwood Mall.
Scholarships awarded
CANFIELD -- Move Over Broadway Productions community theater group has awarded scholarships totaling $2,500 to three college students.
The scholarships are in memory of Terry Olinski, a Move Over Broadway performer.
Recipients are Ashley Schmidt of Youngstown, a sophomore studying musical theater at Point Park University in Pittsburgh; Andrew Shryock of Canfield, a tenor who is studying at Peabody Conservatory near Baltimore and who has already performed in professional opera; and Marlena Wolfe of Warren, a dancer who is pursuing a fine arts degree at Marymount Manhattan College in New York.
'Blessing the Boats'
HIGHLAND HILLS -- "Blessing the Boats," a one-act play by Harlem poet Sekou Sundiata, will be performed at 8 p.m. Sept. 25 at Cuyahoga Community College Eastern Campus Performing Arts Center, 4250 Richmond Road.
A combination of poetry, monologues, readings and comedy, Sundiata reflects on his life while struggling with kidney disease and honors five friends who offered to donate kidneys to help him. Tickets are $15 to $25 and may be purchased through Tickets.com; call (800) 766-6048.
Seniors' variety show
YOUNGSTOWN -- New Senior Players of Mahoning County Senior Center will perform in an "All That Jazz" variety show with orchestra at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the center, 1110 Fifth Ave. Admission is $5, and reservations are requested. Call (330) 744-5071.
