NOTEBOOK YSU vs. Slippery Rock
Streak continues: Thursday's victory was YSU's 26th straight against Division II opponents. Since joining the I-AA ranks in 1981 the Penguins have never lost to a Div. II team. The Penguins were in Div. II from 1973-80. I-AA football began in 1978.
Opening crowd: The attendance figure of 15,756 was smaller than last year's season opener against Edinboro, which drew 16,093. YSU averaged over 16,000 fans a year ago at Stambaugh Stadium.
Disappointed: Slippery Rock has averaged over 300 yards in its first two games this season, but The Rock is still 0-2. Senior wide receiver Brandon Richardson (6-3, 245) had a career-high seven receptions for 67 yards Thursday night.
Starters missing: The Penguins had two defensive starters who didn't dress for Thursday's game. Senior defensive tackle Nate Baston didn't play for violating team policies, while junior safety Chris Goffer didn't dress as he was still waiting on grades from a summer school class. Junior Jamal Lee started for Baston and redshirt freshman Dorian Chenault started for Goffer.
New scoreboard: Half of the new scoreboard was up and running for the opener, as expected. The rest of the scoreboard, a new video display board, will be ready for the third home game, which is against Liberty on Sept. 25.
