In Stockholm, Stonewill get lifetime award
STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone will receive the Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Stockholm International Film Festival.
Stone, who won an Academy Award for 1989's "Born on the Fourth of July," will receive the award at a prize ceremony in Stockholm on Nov. 18, it was announced Thursday.
His movies also include "Platoon," "JFK," "Natural Born Killers" and the upcoming "Alexander," starring Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer.
"With a fearless exploration of individual lives affected by modern-day America, maverick and rebel Oliver Stone has challenged mainstream norms and created a deeply personal and political cinematic world," the prize jury said.
Stone will be given the Bronze Horse. At 16 pounds, the trophy is touted as "the world's heaviest film prize."
Previous recipients include directors Roman Polanski and David Lynch and actresses Lauren Bacall and Gena Rowlands.
Green moths plague'Weird Al' during show
DU QUOIN, Ill. -- Things got hairy for parody singer "Weird Al" Yankovic as a flock of unwanted fans rushed onstage during his performance at a state fair in southern Illinois.
Green moths swarmed Yankovic, some nesting in his trademark long curly locks.
"My band asked me if I could find a concert where we would be attacked by insects," Yankovic told his audience Wednesday at the Du Quoin State Fair. "I said I would see what I could do."
Yankovic didn't seem bugged by the uninvited guests, though, as he plugged along with songs and costume changes during his self-described "rock and comedy multimedia extravaganza" to support his recent album, "Poodle Hat."
Cruise chats with fans, ignores Kidman comment
LONDON -- Tom Cruise mingled with about 3,000 fans at the British premiere of "Collateral," chatting on their cell phones, posing for photos and signing autographs for more than two hours outside a theater in Leicester Square.
Cruise even kept smiling when one fan told him that he should get back together with his ex-wife Nicole Kidman. The suggestion came when Aran Burk put the actor on the phone with his mother, Lina Burk.
"She was almost speechless. She complimented him on his voice and suggested he get back together with Nicole," Aran said. "He complimented her back on her voice, but he pretended he didn't hear the Nicole comment."
Speaking to Cruise was a birthday treat for Mrs. Burk, who turns 50 today.
Cruise, 42, plays his first bad-guy role in "Collateral," starring as a contract killer who hijacks a cab driver and forces him to drive from hit to hit.
He arrived at Thursday's premiere at the Empire theater in a red-and-yellow taxi.
