Relax, freshmen
Hey, freshmen: Are you a little scared to go to high school because of all the unfamiliar faces you'll encounter?
Relax. There are several things you can do to smooth your transition to high school. Compare class schedules with your friends to find out if any of them will be with you. If they're not, find out if you have lunch schedules in common. Also consider joining an after-school club or team. Those are good avenues for meeting new people.
Cool Web site
Sometimes it feels like the formulas and theories we learn in math class have no bearing on our everyday lives. After all, when is the last time you saw your parents apply the Pythagorean theorem? As frustrating and abstract as some of these concepts may seem, in reality we apply mathematic principles in our lives all the time. We just aren't always aware of it. The Annenberg/Center for Public Broadcasting site "Math in Daily Life" (www.learner.org/exhibits/dailymath/index.html) points out practical examples of how we use math on a day-to-day basis.
For example, what if you've been put in charge of making cookies for a community bake sale? The recipe you want to use only yields three dozen cookies, but you need at least nine dozen. By using ratios you can easily increase the amount of food your recipe turns out while keeping all the ingredients in their proper proportion (you don't want your cookies to turn out bitter).
