LISBON -- Columbiana County hopes to have five storm-damaged bridges and culverts repaired or replaced by early October.
Robert Durbin of the county engineer's office told the commissioners Thursday that plans or materials are being readied for four of the five structures. The engineer's office isn't sure yet how it will repair the fifth.
That's good news for motorists who have to take detours because of damage caused by last weekend's flooding.
The engineer's office thought only four structures had been damaged. Damage was discovered to a fifth, a bridge on Darner Road in Elkrun Township, after water subsided more. The proper bridge trusses have been found.
Damaged structures
The other structures are:
UA county culvert on Depot Road, north of Burtview in Butler Township, that was washed out. Work will begin Tuesday. A 96-foot-long pipe was located and will be shipped next week.
UA bridge on Miller Road between Lisbon and Grafton roads on the border of Center and Salem townships. It will be a fast and easy fix, Durbin said. The concrete bridge supports had washed out, but people kept driving over the bridge despite warnings. The engineer's office temporarily removed the $150,000 steel deck until the foundation is restored.
UA structure on Teegarden Road between Yates and McCracken roads in Salem Township. The proper materials have been found.
UA structure on Winona Road between Depot Road and King Road in Butler Township. Plans aren't set because the engineer's office hasn't located a crane big enough to do part of the work.
The estimate for damage to county roads and bridges has grown to $2.1 million. It had been $1.7 million.
All other county roads are open, Durbin told the commissioners.
Jim Hoppel, the chairman of the commissioners, thanked safety forces and citizens for helping out during the flooding that began last Friday evening.
"We, as county commissioners, really appreciate all the efforts of these people," Hoppel said.
