YOUNGSTOWN -- Workers at WYTV Channel 33, 3800 Shady Run Road, discovered a man on the tower as they were coming to work this morning and called police, said General Manager Dave Trabert.
Police charged James Johnson, 35, of Pointview Avenue with breaking and entering and disrupting public services, both felonies. Trabert confirmed that Johnson was displaying a banner that read "Free Traficant."
Trabert said the company is not sure how long Johnson might have been on the tower, which is inside a locked enclosure.
Man wants to buy child
YOUNGSTOWN -- A woman told police that a man came to her door Thursday night and asked to buy one of her grandchildren.
The 59-year-old woman, who lives in the 40 block of West Warren Avenue, said the man came to her door about 10 p.m. and asked to buy one of her three grandchildren, who range in age from 9 to 13 years old.
The woman told him to get off her property, but he kept asking her about buying one of the children. The woman told police that she finally shouted at him to leave, and he then got into a newer silver or gold four-door Ford Taurus and drove off.
The children told police that the same man had sat in his car watching them play outside about 4 p.m. Wednesday.
The woman and her grandchildren did not know the man. They described him as white, in his mid-20s, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 185 pounds. They said he had brown hair and blue eyes.
Corvette wins award
AUSTINTOWN -- A 1957 Corvette owned by township resident Chuck Paden won a Celebrity Pick award at the "Corvettes at Carlisle" car show Aug. 27-29 in Carlisle, Pa.
About 2,500 Corvettes were featured in the event, and Celebrity Pick awards were given to Corvettes judged to be the best all-around.
Paden has owned the Corvette since 1999; it was the first time he had participated in the Carlisle event.
Casa de Cafe burglary
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police are investigating a burglary at Casa de Cafe in the 100 block of East Rayen Avenue.
Owners told police that someone broke in between noon Monday and 4 p.m. Thursday.
Missing were a latte coffee machine, a 60-inch television, coffee pumps, a cash register and the business' security system, which consisted of four cameras, a VCR and a monitor.
YSU student stabbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police are investigating the stabbing of a Youngstown State University student early today.
The 19-year-old Columbus native was with a group of people at Madison and Pennsylvania avenues about 12:45 a.m. when a man cut him, police said.
The victim told police he did not know the man, did not see him approach and did not know why the man would cut him.
The victim, who lives in a YSU dormitory, had two cuts on the side of his neck and one on his left index finger. He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center, police said.
Man shot in arm
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man was shot in the arm early today as he sat in a car in the parking lot of a Hillman Avenue bar.
The 23-year-old Garfield Avenue man told police he was sitting in the passenger seat of a car in the parking lot of Larry's Lounge about 2:30 a.m. when he heard gunshots. The car's rear passenger-side window broke out and he was struck by a bullet, police said.
He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center, officials said.
Crack sealing near Salem
SALEM -- Crack sealing will begin Tuesday on U.S. Route 62 north of Salem in Columbiana County, Ohio Department of Transportation officials said.
Traffic will be maintained but reduced to one lane. The work is to be completed by Oct. 31.
2 to face drug charges
CANFIELD -- Two Evans City, Pa., men are to be arraigned on drug charges stemming from their arrest early today at a motor home parked near Gate 3 at the Canfield Fair.
Police charged Donald Yeany II, 47, with drug abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia, and Frederick McIntyre, 48, with drug abuse and carrying a concealed weapon. Both were set to be arraigned today.
Police said they found suspected cocaine and marijuana, and a marijuana pipe in the vehicle, along with a knife. Police said they also found suspected marijuana and cocaine on McIntyre.
A call about a suspicious-looking man had brought the duo to the attention of police.
