NY-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers lose game, but don't lose ground

Hudson Valley has a one game lead in the wild card standings.
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Although Mahoning Valley lost 4-3 to the Williamsport Crosscutters Wednesday in a New York-Penn League game, the Scrappers (39-34) didn't lose any ground in their pursuit of a wild card playoff berth.
Hudson Valley (38-31), which has a one game lead over the Scrappers for that playoff spot, lost to Lowell 8-7.
The setback to the Crosscutters went 10 innings.
Williamsport scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 10th as Mike Hofius, who had two hits, singled, then gave way to pinch runner Jermel Lomack. A.J. Johnson grounded out, advancing Lomack to second. Steve Lerud and pinch hitter Tim Brown then induced back-to-back walks. Brett Grandstrand, who had two hits, singled to score Lomack.
The Scrappers didn't go down without a fight. They trailed 3-0 after six innings, but Fernando Pacheco hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
In the eighth inning, the Scrappers tied the score as Brett Parker singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Christopher Gimenez singled Parker to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Wyatt Toregas.
Matt Knox (3-4) worked 21/3 innings for the Scrappers and gave up the deciding run to take the loss.
Steve Herce (2-2) worked three innings for the Crosscutters, allowing five hits and a run to pick up the win.
