Driver dies in crash
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An Enon Valley man was killed in a car crash on Pa. Route 551 in North Beaver Township.
Pennsylvania State Police said Robert F. Stevenson, 63, was traveling north when his car crossed the center line at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday and hit head on another vehicle driven by Joseph C. Davis, 39, of New Castle.
Police said Stevenson was pronounced dead at the scene. Davis was taken to UPMC hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition was not available this morning.
Public hearing on zoning
NORTH LIMA -- A public hearing will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the South Range High School auditorium, 11836 South Ave., to discuss an overview of Beaver Township's draft zoning resolution and zoning map.
The township zoning commission has spent eight months updating and revising the township zoning resolution and map. Proposed changes include establishment of new zoning districts, amendments to permitted uses and reclassification of land to conform with new districts.
At the conclusion of the hearing, the zoning resolution and map amendments will be considered by the township zoning commission for recommendation to the township trustees.
Community issues forum
FARRELL, Pa. -- Shenango Valley Initiative will hold a Community Issues Assembly at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Greater Mount Zion Church of God in Christ, 1825 Roemer Blvd.
The church-based community action group has invited community leaders, business owners, pastors and the public to attend the event to discuss four issues: Affordable homeownership and housing rehabilitation, treatment instead of prison for criminal offenders, the Shenango Valley consolidation referendum and property taxes and school equity financing.
SVI says the meeting is an opportunity for individuals to get involved at the grass-roots level to improve their community.
Debates scheduled
SHARON, Pa. -- The second in a series of four debates between Democratic Party challenger Steven Porter and Republican Party incumbent Phil English in the race for the House seat in the 3rd Congressional District will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Taylor Little Theatre at Mercyhurst College in Erie.
A faculty member of the college will moderate, and there will be a panel of three questioners including a Mercyhurst student, a member of labor and a member of the press.
The remaining two debates will occur Sept. 17 at Grove City College and Sept. 20 at Allegheny College.
Culvert pipe replacement
LEETONIA -- Village street crews will replace a culvert pipe on Butcher Road beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Butcher Road will be closed to through traffic, but residents will have access to Butcher Road from Lisbon-Canfield Road. The work will take about five hours.
Puppy finds a home
NILES -- A German shepherd mix found locked in a shed in McDonald last week now has a permanent home.
The puppy was saved Aug. 24 by Tonya Black of Niles and her sister Candy Skeines.
Black took the dog home and sought a good family for it. Black said she received 50 to 60 telephone calls from people wanting the dog after The Vindicator published a story about the puppy in Saturday's editions.
The dog, now named Bacon, went to a young girl whose father wanted her to have it.
YMCA registration
WARREN -- Registration for youth sports and fall fitness classes at the Warren and Eastwood YMCA will be taken until Friday. Sports include flag football, soccer and basketball.

BAZETTA -- Mosquito Lake State Park will have an end-of-summer celebration from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 11 in the campgrounds off Bazetta Road.
