YOUNGSTOWN -- Franklin L. Sanders, 51, of Breaden Street, was sentenced to eight years in prison Tuesday by Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Sanders pleaded guilty Aug. 19 to four counts of burglary. Court officials said he broke into four homes on the city's North Side on June 9.
Also sentenced to prison by Judge Krichbaum for an unrelated burglary charge was 19-year-old Lynell Stanley of West Marion Avenue. Stanley received a two-year sentence for breaking into the home of a city man in January.
Sept. 11 observance
CANFIELD -- The Cardinal Joint Fire District will conduct an observance of the third anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 on the Village Green.
Participating in the observance will be the Cardinal and Austintown fire department honor guards and the Celtic Flame pipe and drum corps from Warren. Local police and firefighters will give speeches, and a Stat MedEvac helicopter is scheduled to fly over the observance.
Benefit for youth groups
CANFIELD -- Volunteers from Mahoning County Junior Fair organizations will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Pop Shop Restaurant, near the 4-H horse barns, during the Canfield Fair.
The Pop Shop offers hot dogs, sandwiches, salads, fries, soups, desserts and beverages, including sugar-free drinks. Picnic style seating is provided.
Proceeds benefit educational programs for Junior Fair youths.
Booth at Canfield Fair
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown 2010 will have an information booth inside the government building at the Canfield Fair.
The booth will be staffed from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day of the fair.
Information on 2010, the comprehensive plan for the city, will be available. Information on city business incentive programs and the downtown arena also will be available.
House is shot up
YOUNGSTOWN -- A feud over drug turf likely led to gunfire at a house in the 1500 block of Bennington Avenue at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The East Side resident told police that he heard gunfire and then saw two bullet holes in his living room wall and two more in a front bedroom wall.
Eight 9mm casings were found in the road.
A red Pontiac Sunbird convertible was seen fleeing the scene. The car was later found by police in a driveway on Oak Lane, and a 9mm handgun was found nearby in the grass.
Public hearing on zoning
NORTH LIMA -- A public hearing will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the South Range High School auditorium, 11836 South Ave., to discuss an overview of Beaver Township's draft zoning resolution and zoning map.
The township zoning commission has spent eight months updating and revising the township zoning resolution and map. Proposed changes include establishment of new zoning districts, amendments to permitted uses and reclassification of land to conform with new districts.
At the conclusion of the hearing, the zoning resolution and map amendments will be considered by the township zoning commission for recommendation to the township trustees.
Bus station break-in
WARREN -- An employee of the Greyhound Bus Station, 408 E. Market St., told police someone broke into the business and removed several items.
Someone entered the building Tuesday evening by prying open a door, reports state. The report did not list what items were taken.
Puppy finds a home
NILES -- A German shepherd mix found locked in a shed in McDonald last week now has a permanent home.
The puppy was saved Aug. 24 by Tonya Black of Niles and her sister Candy Skeines. Black took the dog home and sought a good family for it.
Black said she received 50 to 60 telephone calls from people wanting the dog after The Vindicator published a story about the puppy in Saturday's editions.
The dog, now named Bacon, went to a young girl whose father wanted her to have it.
