Poland tops Struthers in 2004 season finale



The Wildcats got to within eight points before the Bulldogs pulled away.
STRUTHERS -- Ty Campana's second touchdown of the game pulled the Struthers High football team within 8 in the fourth quarter, but Poland held on for a 35-13 Metro Athletic Conference win on Friday.
Poland (3-7, 2-4) outgained the Wildcats, 408-98, with 377 of the Bulldogs' yards coming on the ground. Jim Shurilla gained 285 yards on 37 carries and scored three touchdowns. Freshman Brandon Beachum added 37 yards rushing.
Campana, a senior wideout, had a 79-yard kickoff return and caught a 14-yard TD from Mike Duponty. Campana's TD reception and Duponty's point-after kick with 10:02 remaining in the game pulled the Wildcats within 21-13. But Dom Marchionda had a 1-yard TD for the Bulldogs at 6:18, followed by Shurilla's 37-yard TD run at 3:40.
Early in the game, Marchionda tossed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Luke Blangero. Fred Romeo had five PATs.
For Struthers (1-9, 0-6), junior running back Eric Anderson had 35 yards on eight attempts and junior Justin Penson picked up 24 yards on eight tries. The Wildcats (1-9, 0-6) had 50 yards rushing and 48 passing, with Duponty, a junior quarterback, completing 6 of 19 passes.

SALEM -- Salem (6-4) posted its first winning season since 1994 and snapped a 11-game losing streak to Campbell dating back to 1983.
The last time the schools met was in 1993 when the Red Devils prevailed 14-13.
Salem senior running back Grant Sevek rushed 17 times for 113 yards, which included TD runs of 1, 4 and 2 yards.
The Quakers took a 13-0 lead in the first quarter and put the contest out of reach as they tallied 28 points in the second period to lead 41-0 at halftime.
Mark Kolich of Salem scored twice on runs of 18 and 5 yards.
The Quakers gained 233 yards on 50 attempts and they were 3 of 5 passing for 51 yards.
Derrell Johnson of Campbell (1-9) caught a 33-yard TD pass from Demetrius Dawson in the fourth quarter.
Johnson picked up 120 yards on 20 rushes. Campbell gained 128 yards on 30 tries and hit on 2 of 8 passes for 44.
