WASHINGTON -- Jaime Moreno and Bryan Namoff scored late in the second half to help D.C. United beat the MetroStars 2-0 Saturday night and advance to the Eastern Conference final.
Freddy Adu had an assist in his first career playoff appearance for D.C., which won the home-and-home, total-goals series 4-0.
Adu entered in the 79th minute and quickly helped United take the lead. He used his speed to beat the MetroStars' defense down the left side and played a perfect pass to the far post, where Moreno scored into an open net for a 1-0 lead in the 85th minute.
United scored again in the 89th when Namoff converted a rebound after Dema Kovalenko's free kick.
United goalkeeper Nick Rimando had six saves.
In a physical game that featured nine yellow cards, D.C. remained stingy on defense while protecting the two-goal lead it built in the first game of the series.
Wizards 3, Earthquakes 0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jack Jewsbury's goal in injury time sent Kansas City to the Western Conference final.
After losing 2-0 to the Earthquakes last Sunday, Kansas City appeared to have at least forced overtime when it led 2-0 late in the second half of the rematch. Then, in the second minute of injury time, Jewsbury received a pass from Igor Simutenkov just outside the penalty area and shot the ball in off the left post.
Kansas City opened the scoring Saturday in the 26th minute when rookie Khari Stephenson, making his first professional start, settled Jewsbury's pass and beat goalkeeper Pat Onstad from the middle of the penalty area.
The Wizards tied the series on an own goal in the 48th minute. Alex Zotinca lofted the ball toward a breaking Jimmy Conrad, and San Jose's Brian Ching stuck his left foot out and tipped the ball in by accident.
