Flu shots available
AUSTINTOWN -- Forum Health Austintown Immediate Care offers a flu vaccine clinic for adults beginning at 8 a.m. Friday at the Austintown Cinema in the Austintown Plaza, 6000 Mahoning Ave. The vaccine costs $20, but is free for those with traditional Medicare. Individuals will be screened for high risk of serious flu complications according to recommendations provided by the Center For Disease Control. Preference will be given to people considered at risk. Those not at high risk might not get the vaccination.
Jail inmate escapes
LISBON -- A Columbiana County Jail inmate escaped Friday night. Police said Michael J. Mick, 27, is described as white, 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds, with reddish blond hair. Police said he may have been headed for his girlfriend's home in Jefferson County.
Drug raid at Niles home
NILES -- Investigators from the Niles and Weathersfield Township narcotics units found marijuana, guns, scales and records during a search of a 10th Street home. Police said the 11:40 a.m. Saturday raid came after a three-month investigation during which police bought marijuana from the homeowner. Police said they also found an exterior closed circuit camera with inside monitors, unidentified white powder and an undetermined amount of cash. Arrest warrants will be obtained later, and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will be contacted, police said.
Southern High athletics
SALINEVILLE -- Southern school officials have planned a public forum on the district's athletic programs for 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at Southern High School. Superintendent Fred Burns said school officials want teachers, students, parents and fans of Southern athletic programs to give input about how to boost support and participation. He said the high school football varsity ended the season with a 1-8 record, forfeiting Friday's game because they did not have enough players healthy to field a team. He said school officials want anyone interested in Southern athletics to brainstorm about the sports that are offered, any changes they would like to see and the direction in which they would like to see the athletic department move.
Vigil for poor people
WARREN -- Trumbull Community Action Program is conducting an election eve vigil from 6 to 11 p.m. Monday at Warren West, 1230 Palmyra Road S.W. TCAP, a nonprofit social service agency, is sponsoring the event to draw attention to the plight of the poor people in the community. A dinner will be served . There will be games, entertainment and prizes. Speakers will raise awareness of issues affecting low-income residents. A candlelight vigil walk will begin at 10:30 p.m.
Insurance crisis
ROOTSTOWN -- Ann Womer Benjamin, director of the Ohio Department of Insurance and chairwoman of the Ohio Medical Malpractice Insurance Commission, will discuss the professional liability insurance crisis at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ralph Regula Conference Center at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
Three homes raided
YOUNGSTOWN -- Six men were arrested after three search warrants were executed at homes on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Ravenwood and Chicago avenues. Police said they found crack cocaine, heroin, other drugs and weapons in the homes. Members of the Mahoning County vice squad executed the search warrants from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
