Man gets 50 years for shooting 2 cops

DAYTON (AP) -- A judge sentenced a man to 50 years in prison for shooting two police officers, calling his actions "reprehensible."
Matthew Grimes, 34, pleaded guilty Oct. 15 to charges he shot and wounded Montgomery County deputy sheriff Johnathan Miller and Trotwood officer Brent Rasor, who originally took him into custody in January on suspicion he robbed a Trotwood home.
Grimes fired at Rasor and Miller with a small handgun and fled in a Trotwood cruiser. He crashed the cruiser and pointed a gun at another police officer before he was shot.
Rasor was shot in the throat and suffered two shattered vertebrae that caused mild brain damage, assistant county prosecutor Tracey Ballard said.
Miller still has a bullet lodged behind his jaw, Ballard said.
Assistant prosecutor Jeffrey Patzer said both officers have returned to work.
Neither officer spoke at the sentencing hearing, but they submitted letters to Judge Barbara Gorman of Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.
Grimes declined to speak at the hearing.
