SINGING TELEGRAMS Auditions set for performers for new service

YOUNGSTOWN -- Singers, actors, dancers and other artists have a new opportunity to make money while sharing their skills with the public.
Center Stage Performance and Productions will audition and hire local talent for providing singing telegrams and performing at special events.
Liz Rubino, Center Stage's owner and teaching artist, is collaborating with Joe Mineo, owner of Something New Florist in Canfield, on a singing telegram and flower delivery service that they will launch in the coming months.
Something New also wants to expand its business of providing character entertainment and d & eacute;cor at large parties and events from Cleveland to Pittsburgh. Actors may pose as Disney characters, show business celebrities or imaginary personalities.
Audition schedule
Auditions will be Nov. 13 at Oakland Center for the Arts, 220 W. Boardman St.
Vocalists will be scheduled between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Pianist Anthony Ruggiero will provide accompaniment for singers, who are encouraged to provide sheet music. A capella performances also are welcome; singing to taped music is not permitted.
Auditions will continue from 2 to 5 p.m. for bands and specialty acts, such as comedians, dancers and gymnasts.

Rubino is a board member and artistic director at Oakland Center for the Arts. She was in high school when she was named the winner in the soloist category at the 1997 National Choral Competition in Boston. She currently is performing in professional shows in Cleveland.
