YOUNGSTOWN | Board takes action



In other action Tuesday, the city school board:
Commended Jennifer Walker, an honors English teacher at The Rayen School, and Geraldine DeWitt-Tichnor, a special-education teacher at Wilson High School, for achieving national board certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Approved bidding for $97,000 work of asbestos removal in the renovation of Chaney High School, with the work to be done when students are not in the building.
Adopted a five-year financial forecast prepared by Treasurer Carolyn Funk, which shows the district in the black in the first three years, but deficits of $1,044,633 and $9,231,892, respectively, in the fourth and fifth years, based on assumptions of state funding at current levels and rising salary, benefit and utility costs.
Heard Rosemary Marich, director of educational research, report official district enrollment dropped 391 pupils since last school year, bringing the current total to 9,235. Of the 391 lost pupils, who each cost the district about $5,000 in annual state aid, she estimated 123 went to charter schools, 160 to other public schools under open enrollment and 53 to private schools.
Adopted a resolution asking the Ohio General Assembly to follow the lead of 12 other states by declaring an annual sales tax holiday for back-to-school supply purchases.
