SEWER REPAIRS New Castle to get funds from county
More repair work is needed on Mill Street.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City officials are getting a little help from Lawrence County to clean up sewers damaged by heavy rains in late summer.
County commissioners agreed Tuesday to give New Castle $25,000 from the county liquid fuel accounts -- money derived from gasoline taxes that can be used only for road-related projects.
Tammi Gibson, city business administrator, said New Castle got a similar county contribution last year to pay for repairs.
She said the money will likely be used to reimburse the city for repairs already completed.
According to a letter sent to the county, the city spent about $17,138 to repair sewers on Long Avenue, Moravia Street, East Washington Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. City workers must still repair Mill Street, the letter says.
Commissioners have been allocating liquid fuels funds out to municipalities in the last month to help make repairs to damage done by the effects of Hurricanes Ivan and Jeanne.
The county was given disaster and emergency status by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for both storms.
Residents are eligible for federal grants to help make repairs to private property damaged during the heavy rains.
