SOUTHINGTON -- The Trumbull County Engineer has canceled the planned road closure of Warren Burton Road over the next two weeks. Several culverts were to have been replaced. The work will be rescheduled, officials say.
Voting on tax abatement
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners will vote next week on a proposed 15-year tax break on $14.5 million to $19 million renovation at ISG Warren.
This will be the first 15-year tax abatement to be considered in Trumbull County since they became possible under state law this summer, planning commission director Alan Knapp said. Most tax abatements are 10 years.
The vote was delayed until next week to allow the Warren Board of Education time to review the company's application, he said. A change in the ownership of ISG is not expected to affect the project, he said.
ISG plans to replace coke furnaces at the Warren Coke Plant, he said.
Robbery at Dairy Mart
WARREN -- Police are investigating an aggravated robbery of the Dairy Mart, 606 North Park Ave. According to reports, a man entered the store around 11:30 p.m. Monday and bought a 40-ounce bottle. He then displayed a handgun and ordered the clerk to put an undetermined amount of beer in a bag. The man then fled. No injuries were reported.
Free walking tour set
NILES -- Local historian Wendell Lauth will lead a walking tour of the Niles Cemetery beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday. Lauth will point out the graves of famous people, as well as tell a tale or two about some of the more infamous individuals buried in the cemetery.
The free walking tour, sponsored by the McKinley Memorial Library, will start near the Niles-Cortland Road entrance of the cemetery. Participants are asked to wear appropriate walking shoes and to bring a flashlight.
Halloween party planned
GIRARD -- A Halloween party for Girard and children from the surrounding area will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Rose School gymnasium. The event is sponsored by the St. Rose youth ministry and the Girard Fraternal Order of Police. Included in plans for the party are prizes, Halloween treats and music by the Girard High School band and majorettes. The teens of the youth ministry will donate the candy, decorate the gym and host the party.
Birdseed fund-raiser
HOWLAND -- The TAMPEEL Environmental Education Program will have a birdseed fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Howland Park. Different mixes and sizes are available to feed all kinds of wild birds. Proceeds will benefit the TAMPEEL program, which TAMPEEL operates field trips for local pupils to engage in hands-on nature study. Howland Park is at the end of Rosegarden Drive from East Market Street.
Board meeting changed
LORDSTOWN -- The Lordstown Board of Education has changed its regular meeting to Nov. 16. The board will conduct a work session at 6 p.m., with the meeting to follow at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was originally scheduled for Nov. 17.
Neighborhood Watch
VIENNA -- The next meeting of the Vienna Township Neighborhood Watch will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Vienna Town Hall. Police Chief David Ovesny will give his monthly report, and guest speaker will be Bob Villers, director of the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District. Villers will discuss recycling and the programs provided by his organization, how it is funded and its history.
Woman reports threats
NILES -- The former girlfriend of a Warren man who was released from Niles City Jail on Tuesday told police he was back at her apartment this morning, threatening her life.
Jose Croal, 26, of Trumbull Avenue, Warren, was released on bond Tuesday evening from the jail, after he was arrested that morning on charges of domestic violence, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal trespassing and violation of a protection order.
According to reports, the woman called police around 12:30 a.m. today and said Croal was trying to get into her Royal Mall Drive apartment. Reports said police were unable to locate Croal when they arrived.
