Resident cited after crash
YOUNGSTOWN -- After a hit-skip crash Tuesday at Mahoning and Schenley avenues, a witness led police to 245 Matta Ave., where they issued a citation to the resident, Thomas F. Keslar, 49, charging him with hit-skip to realty (fire hydrant). Keslar told police that he lost control trying to avoid another car and hit a utility pole and the hydrant. Police found orange paint on the left rear quarter panel of his car and severe damage to the left side of the car. The witness also told police that two unidentified men in a white car stopped after the crash and took the hydrant.
Officer completes training
AUSTINTOWN -- Township trustees announced that police Lt. Robert Schaeffer has completed state Master Evidence Investigator training. Acting Police Chief Lt. Mark Durkin said the training calls for police to complete about 300 hours of courses on collecting latent fingerprints, blood samples and other evidence. He noted that only about 50 police officers in Ohio have completed the training, including Austintown Detective Sgt. Dan Kosco.
Flu shot clinic rescheduled
BOARDMAN -- The flu shot clinic at the Boardman Giant Eagle, 476 Boardman-Canfield Road, originally scheduled for Saturday Oct. 30, has been rescheduled to Nov. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Customers that meet the health guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control can obtain a flu vaccination for $20. The shot is free for customers with Medicare Part B and non-HMO plans, company officials said.
Counterfeit bill passed
STRUTHERS -- Police are seeking a woman accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill to pay for a drink at the Wagon Wheel Tavern, 88 N. Bridge St., over the weekend. Police said the woman ordered and paid for the drink about 10:15 p.m. Friday. When the bartender noticed the money did not feel real, she asked the customer her name. The bartender told police the woman said her name was Cindy but that her black initial purse had a large blue "M" on it. When the bartender took the $20 bill to show another employee, the woman fled. The woman is described as thin, about 5 feet 4 inches tall with short, dark brown hair.
Concealed-weapon case
STRUTHERS -- John R. Warchol, 37, of Boardman was sentenced to 30 days in jail, sentence suspended, one year's probation and fined $250 plus court costs after being found guilty Monday in municipal court of carrying a concealed weapon. A charge of disorderly conduct was dismissed. Warchol was arrested last January after a disturbance inside the Tangier Bar, 880 Youngstown-Poland Road. He was carrying brass knuckles.
Facing a drug charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- As Terrence Wigfall walked along the 100 block of Rutledge Avenue on Tuesday evening, he tossed a lip-balm container to the ground when he saw police, according to reports. Officers said they found suspected crack cocaine in the container and arrested Wigfall, 20, of Oak Street Extension, on charges of possession of drugs and littering.
N. Lima Halloween party
NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township Park Board will have a Halloween party from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Woodworth Park, 255 Warren Ave. The party is open to township residents' children who are under 13. Children should bring a flashlight for a pumpkin hunt. Refreshments will be served.
Halloween party planned
GIRARD -- A Halloween party for children from Girard and the surrounding area will be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Rose School gymnasium. The event is sponsored by the St. Rose youth ministry and the Girard Fraternal Order of Police. Prizes, Halloween treats and music by the Girard High School band and majorettes will be provided.
Voting on tax abatement
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners will vote next week on a proposed 15-year tax break on $14.5 million to $19 million renovation at ISG Warren. This will be the first 15-year tax abatement to be considered in Trumbull County since they became possible under state law this summer, planning commission director Alan Knapp said. Most tax abatements are 10 years. The vote was delayed until next week to allow the Warren Board of Education time to review the company's application, he said. ISG plans to replace coke furnaces at the Warren Coke Plant, he said.
