Contract deadline nearsfor nursing-home workers
NORTH LIMA -- Unionized workers at Assumption Village nursing home are threatening to walk off their jobs at 7:30 a.m. Friday if they don't reach a contract settlement with Humility of Mary Health Partners, which owns the center.
About 140 practical nurses, nursing assistants, housekeeping, laundry and maintenance workers represented by Service Employees International Union, District 1199, have been working without a contract since their three-year pact expired Sept. 30.
Albert Jackson, an SEIU spokesman, said the key issues are wages, health insurance and a proposal to change the way employees are reimbursed for unused sick days and paid days off.
Warren Harris, vice president of long-term care HMHP, said he is confident that both sides will continue to work toward a fair contract.
