Police work with ATF agents to secure weapons in home

Police said Larry Larson was injured after threatening a caregiver.
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- South Pymatuning Township police said they aided agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in securing weapons and related material at the home of Larry J. Larson, a gun dealer injured in an explosion near Mercer.
Larson, 55, of Cardinal Drive, remained in critical condition Monday in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, with injuries suffered in the blast Friday.
John Kelly, South Pymatuning police chief, said police went to Larson's home with his permission Saturday morning to secure and inventory weapons in his home. Larson holds a Class 3 gun dealer's license, which permits him to deal with fully automatic weapons.
People living near the Cardinal Drive home wanted to be sure they were safe and there was no danger of an explosion there, Kelly said.
ATF agents inventoried weapons in the home and made sure they were secured in a vault there, he said, adding that no explosives were found at the house.
Argument
Pennsylvania State Police said Larson is facing a charge of simple assault after he had an argument with his personal caregiver, a 44-year-old Wheatland woman, at a trailer home Larson has on Filer Road in Findley Township near Mercer.
The argument led to Larson allegedly threatening the woman with a knife, police said, adding that Larson had a handgun and a detonating device in his possession as well.
The caregiver told police she was able to get those items from Larson and flee the residence around 2:40 p.m. Friday.
She called state police and met a trooper at the end of the driveway at the Filer Road home. A short time later, an explosion was heard from inside the trailer and police found Larson injured inside.
He was flown from the scene by helicopter to St. Elizabeth, police said. Authorities haven't revealed what type of explosive injured Larson.
