Financial assistance for high school seniors
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarship program will award a one-time, $1,200 scholarship to a select number of high school seniors who plan to enroll in an accredited college, university or vocational-technical school and who meet eligibility requirements. Students can visit the customer information center at the Southern Park Mall or the Web site at www.sfy.org. To be considered, students must submit an application, along with their official transcripts and parents' most recently filed income tax form by Dec. 1. Selections will be based on financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities.

Science event for kidsat KSU Trumbull Campus
CHAMPION -- A Super Science Saturday event will take place at Kent State University Trumbull Campus from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 6. It will provide 120 pupils in grades four to six with 14 hands-on activities to explore a variety of chemical and physical changes and to relate them to art, nature and technology. Faculty and 40 area teachers will provide materials and supervision. Activities will include learning secrets of painting with flower pigments, discovering where a candle flame goes and observing changes in familiar materials. Participants will be given T-shirts to personalize with chromatography techniques.

Family leave seminar
CANTON -- Kent State University Stark Campus' Office of Corporate and Community Services, Your Corporate University, will be offering a Family Medical Leave Act program geared toward human resource professionals and business owners. The program, Administering FMLA Panel Discussion, is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 5 in the on-campus Professional Education and Conference Center. It will include two human resource professionals and an attorney who specializes in employment law. They will provide information to help organizations understand and administer the FMLA law. Leisurely nature hike

Graduate school formed
ASHLAND -- Ashland University Provost Dr. Robert Suggs has announced the formation of a graduate school which will be added to the university's academic structure. Suggs also named Associate Provost Dr. John Sikula as the founding dean of the new graduate school. Staffing will come from other areas on campus. The deans of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dauch College of Business and Economics and College of Education will have direct oversight of the academic programs coming from their respective colleges. In addition to the master's of education, master's of business administration and doctor of education degrees, Ashland is pursuing plans for a master's of fine arts in English and a master's of arts in history/political science. About 5,000 of Ashland's nearly 7,000 students are enrolled in graduate-level courses.
