Police probe Findley Twp. standoff

MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police are still investigating a standoff that ended with a Sharpsville man in critical condition with injuries he apparently suffered from an explosion Friday night.
Police identified the man as Larry J. Larson of Cardinal Drive. They declined to say whether he will be charged. Police listed Larson as 55 years old, but a spokeswoman for St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, said he is 24.
Police reports said Larson had gotten into an argument with his caregiver, a 44-year-old woman, at her home on Filer Road, Findley Township. Police weren't sure what sparked the argument.
They said Larson threatened the woman with a knife during the argument, and that he also had a handgun and a "detonating device."
The victim eventually was able to escape from the house and contact state police, who responded and found her at the end of the driveway.
A short time later, an explosion was heard coming from the residence. Police went into the house and found Larson with severe injuries from the explosion.
Larson was flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth. The woman was not injured in the standoff, which began around 3 p.m. Friday and reportedly ended around eight hours later.
