NOTEBOOK | Ohio State vs. Indiana
Consistent kicker: Senior Mike Nugent added three more field goals to extend his career school record to 63. He's within 35 points of OSU's career scoring record and, with his 52-yard field goal on Saturday, improved to 7-for-8 for his career from 50-plus yards. "He's amazing," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. "When we lined up for that one from 52, I thought, boy, I can't believe we're putting him in this situation [again]. And bang, it goes through. And I think, why would I ever doubt him?"
Youth movement: The Buckeyes got key contributions from several freshmen on Saturday, including running back Antonio Pittman (144 yards rushing, 1 TD) and Ted Ginn, Jr. (59-yard TD reception). In addition, offensive lineman Steve Rehring got his first start, redshirt freshman Tony Gonzalez saw significant action and fullback Dionte Johnson got his first carries of his career (two for 9 yards). "We want to show everyone there's more than just Adrian Peterson," said Pittman, referring to Oklahoma's standout freshman running back.
Stepping up, stepping in: Gonzalez, a former standout at Cleveland St. Ignatius, caught two passes for 21 yards and may have moved ahead of senior Bam Childress on the depth chart. "We're really excited about Tony's progress," Tressel said. "Tony, we think, has earned the opportunities he's gotten and responded well to them." Gonzalez was hampered early in the year with a hamstring injury, but is back to full strength, Tressel said.
Cleveland connection: Ohio State has four players from Cleveland Glenville High School on the team -- Ginn, quarterback Troy Smith, cornerback Donte Whitner and linebacker Curtis Terry. Smith, getting his first career start, hooked up with Ginn on the game's touchdown. "Troy is like my big brother and I am so happy for him," Ginn said. "I thought he played very well today."
Up next: Ohio State will play host to Penn State on Saturday, then play back-to-back road games against Michigan State and Purdue before returning home for the Michigan game.
